新年的電影時刻

今天參加 Kerim 的新年聊天 party,我特別要謝謝 Shashwati 的幫忙,也帶了圓桌會議朋友 Thorsten Schilling 所帶給我,德國 bpb(Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung)製作的紀錄片 Demokratie für alle?(Democracy for all?)(感謝 Zonble 就標題的德文解說。這一系列影片,公共電視好像已經播映過了,叫做《為什麼要民主?》)跟 Kerim 與 Shashwati 分享。

在 party 上碰到 Shashwati 的好朋友《Viva Tonal跳舞時代》的導演郭珍弟學姐,以及世新廣電系的林筱芳(Culturemondo 圓桌會議有特別請她幫忙)。《跳舞時代》實在太如雷灌耳了,沒有想到早在當年《搜神記》裡面就有她的蹤影了。今年三月她的劇情新片即將要上映:《練.戀.舞》介紹文章說,這是

「一段生命歷程的故事,生命宛如一曲探戈,生老病死,愛恨嗔癡,讓每個人對生命屢屢厭棄又割捨不斷。」

我則跟筱芳聊到我最近很迷的第二人生紀錄片 Second Me,裡面細緻處理虛擬世界中的互動展現,讓我想到新/數位電影的一些種種可能。無論《蘿拉快跑》或者 Fight Club 導演後來朝向數位電影的放手革命性的嘗試。這也是回應珍弟學姐提到的保守慣性,我自己所想到的攻克的可能。我自己關於這些的想法得力於這本 The End of Celluloid: Film Futures in the Digital Age

因為 Shashwati 的緣故,我竟然在新年的第一天就與愛戀多年的電影時刻意外地重逢了,這…這真是太神奇了啊! 🙂

沙漠與大敘利亞 Syriana

看完《諜對諜》(Syriana)這部獲得 2005 年奧斯卡最佳男配角獎的多線石油政治批判電影。坐在桌子前面,讀到 BBC 40 分鐘前的中文新聞:美軍打死 16 名阿富汗平民

在阿富汗東部,一名自殺式炸彈攻擊者襲擊了一支美國車隊,隨後武裝分子和美國軍隊之間展開交火,至少16位平民被美軍打死,30多人受傷。

事件發生地點位於賈拉拉巴德至巴基斯坦的路上。

平民被殺事件引起當地上千民眾舉行抗議活動,示威者據報與阿富汗警察發生了衝突。

另外,北約發言人表示,兩名北約士兵在阿富汗南部被打死,但他沒有說明這兩名士兵的國籍。

美國軍方表示,事件發生時,載有爆炸物的一輛微型小巴衝向一支美國車隊,造成一名士兵受傷。

美軍士兵隨後受到來自四面八方的襲擊,為了保護車隊,美軍士兵與武裝分子展開了交火。

BBC駐喀布爾記者萊特黑德報道說,當地民眾則表示,美軍在遭到自殺式汽車炸彈襲擊後向平民開火。

上千民眾舉行示威,抗議大批平民被殺,示威者指責美軍向過路人開火。

記者們說,過去12個月以來,阿富汗發生的自殺式爆炸攻擊事件大幅增加,但這種有預謀、協調一致的襲擊還相對較少。

但是卻想到 TM 昨天跟我介紹的 Serious Game 嚴肅遊戲清單,裡面有一個小遊戲 912,九月十二日

在讀完 wikipedia 的詳細解說之後(我喜歡那看起來很熟悉的海報),我知道了片名 Syriana 是「大敘利亞式的和平」(The Syrian Peace)的意思;延伸自 Pax Syriana,Pax Romana 與 Pax Britannica。暗喻一個人為扶持的魁儡國家,以及背後利益獲得全力確保所帶來的一切事務以及區域的和平。這裡的敘利亞非指 1944 年建國之後的敘利亞,而是指中東這片土地的意思。

The movie’s title is suggested to derive from the hypothesized Pax Syriana, as an allusion to the necessary state of peace between Syria and the U.S. as it relates to the oil business. In a December 2005 interview, Baer told NPR that the title is a metaphor for foreign intervention in the Middle East, referring to post-World War II think tank strategic studies for the creation of an artificial state (such as Iraq, created from the elements of the former Ottoman Empire) that would ensure continued western access to crude oil. The movie’s website states that “‘Syriana’ is a very real term used by Washington think-tanks to describe a hypothetical reshaping of the Middle East."[3] Gaghan said he saw Syriana as “a great word that could stand for man’s perpetual hope of remaking any geographic region to suit his own needs." [4]

The word Syriana derives from Syria + the Latin suffix -ana, a neuter plural form; it means, roughly, “things Syrian." Historically, Syria refers not to the state that since 1944 has borne the name, but to a more extensive land stretching from the eastern shores of the Mediterranean Sea to the middle Euphrates River and the western edge of the desert steppe, and from the Tauric system of mountains in the north to the edge of the Sinai desert in the south. This land was part of the Fertile Crescent, and has historically been a geopolitically crucial junction for trade routes from the east, from Asia Minor and the Aegean, and from Egypt, and has long been a focus of great power conflicts. The word Syria does not appear in the Hebrew original of the Scriptures, but appears in the Septuagint as the translation of Aram. Herodotus speaks of “Syrians" as identical with Assyrians, but the term’s geographical significance was not well defined in pre-Greek and Greek times. As an ethnic term, “Syrian" came to refer in Antiquity to Semitic peoples living outside Mesopotamian and Arabian areas. Greco-Roman administrations were the first to apply the term to a definite district (Encyclopedia Britannica, 11th ed.).

這部電影也有知名影評人 Roger Ebert 沿用 Alissa Quart 所發明的名詞 hyperlink cinema 超連結電影 來描述 Syriana 這部片,認為它是一部多線進行的年度電影首選。

Hyperlink movies are films following multiple story lines and multiple characters. These story arcs and characters intersect obliquely and subtly. Events in one story arc affect other story lines or characters, often in ways that the characters are unaware of or do not fully understand. Hyperlink cinema is often characterized by globe-spanning locations, multiple languages, and frequent though unannounced use of flashback and flashforward. Also, strict parameters in terms of art direction, cinematography and mise en scène are used in each story line, so as to create an abrupt visual break when cutting between characters and arcs.
