The UN taking over the internet. That should really, really, really worry anyone with half a brain. Currently, the internet is governed by ICANN, a private organization which has virtually no real oversight, but pays lip service to the US in tht area. Kofi Annan has pushed initiatives to give governance of the internet to the UN. Imagine that political mess governing speech on the internet. This Should Scare You – Blue Crab Boulevard
One day after the opening of the Internet Governance Forum in Athens, Greece, which was attended by prime minister Kostas Karamanlis, cultureguide.gr, Greece?s most successful cultural website was shut down by the Ministry of Culture. The incident happened at a time when international media were criticizing the country on the unprecedented case of censorship against blogme.gr, a search engine for Greek blogs, which was suspended, while its administrator , Mr. Andonis Tsipropoulos was arrested without prior notice at his residence in Athens.
Cultureguide.gr was ran by a team of seven journalists, who were covering all cultural events taking place in Greece. The project started its operation in June 2002 and soon managed to become the country?s most popular cultural website, visited by more than 10,000 internet users daily. It was also, Greece?s sole voice on culture abroad, since it had an exceptionally updated English language edition.
