Government Scholarship Exam. 公費留考

週末剛剛做完了這件事情(公費留考)。這件從九月多開始踏出序幕的舞步,到十二月底畫下了句點。語文能力證明報名、語文考試、留考報名、考試。而這些交雜在這幾個月的兩次歐洲之旅中間。

Just finished the governmental scholarship for post-graduate abroad study. This is the dance started in early September, ended last Sunday of late December, twisted with my 2 trips to Europe in these 4 months. Registering for TOEFL CBT in Amsterdam, TOEFL CBT exam in London, register for scholarship exam in Taipei, and having the exam finished right after the Geneva WSIS and big cold/illness. Those’re amazing and the battles worth to remember.

還記得 deadhead 跟 gugod 在雨中站在阿姆斯特丹的街頭,幫我撐雨傘打電話給荷蘭的 TOEFL 歐洲區域報考中心報名的樣子;一個字母一個字母的唸給好心的報名小姐聽,("I is for Information");電話卡講到沒了再繼續分段式的語音信用卡刷卡。這一切只為了要在台灣 10 月 13 日報名截止之前,9 月 25 日在英國倫敦 Twickenham 能夠考試,取得兩週後的 TOEFL 的成績證明。也還記得在 Twickenham 街頭 1 個小時前找考場的焦慮與緊張,出門將地址留在電腦裡但是既沒有帶電源線、也沒有帶電池。

Still remember deadhead and gugod holding the umbrella on the street of raining Amsterdam, and let me telephoning the TOEFL Europe Regional Registration Center in Netherlands. World by word with dialogues like “I is for Information", I registered on the street for having a TOEFL CBT(computer based test) in south London, Twickenham. While running out of telephone card, the kind lady allowed me to phone later to submit my credit card data in 2nd phone. Those were only to certificate of my language ability 2 weeks before the physical registration of the scholarship exam in Taipei, October 13th. And in Twickenham, I locked the address in notebook without battery and power cord 1 hours before having the exam, and some wonderful cybercafe rescue me to locate the test center online and nearby.,

而這一切就是為了衝回台灣報名考試。報考的是科技與社會,其實期待著這個類型的考題能夠詢問一些問題:你對於科技與社會研究的想法是什麼?框架(framework)是什麼?你的 academic motivation 來自哪裡?這些是我如果是個出題目的人,我會想要知道這幾十位想要爭取國家支援的學子他們在想什麼。哈哈,當然我不是出題目的人,所以這些考試也就正如意料之中的在辨識台灣這個新興學科的特有氣味。心裡在想,當年沒有這個學科的時候,這些研究者怎麼想像這個領域?如何把自己的研究主題對應到一個尚未浮現的疆域?

Those were just for the registration in Taiwan. Actually, I was expecting the exam be more creative to enquire about questions like these: what do you think of science, technology and society? what’s your framework of this kind of research? what’s your academic motivation toward such new field? Haha. Of course I am not the one who design the items in the exam. So the test is still looked like a kind of identification game. But I still imagine: in the time that there’s no such field, how do these researchers imagine themselves? How do they project their research interest to such an untravelled boundries?

就像是 LoTR 的地圖一樣。

回來之後的第一天跑去交大聽演講:Scott Lash 與 Ien Ang 和陳光興老師與劉紀蕙老師的對話。我問了一個問題:除了傳統地理疆界中的已經被辨識為文化研究的內部議題之外,「外邊的」新事件、抗爭、戰役在文化研究當中如何定位?這個問題我同樣地也想對科技研究領域提出。舊與新之間的對話在哪裡?傳統如何延續他自身的批判關注於自己的外邊,正如魔多的索倫之眼能否瞥見黑門外面高舉安都瑞爾聖劍的人王亞拉岡,同時看到火山口握有魔戒的渺小哈比人?.

At the first day coming back from Geneva, I rushed down to NCTU to listen to a lecture/forum of Prof. Chen Kuang-hsin, Prof. Liu G. H., Prof. Scott Lash and Ien Ang. I was throwing out a question: besides the “interior" issues that was already identified as the “traditional" culture study topics, how do the new events, protests, campaigns “outside over there" the traditional geo boundries be positioned in culture study? The question I would also like to querry it toward the field of science and technology study. Where’s the dialogue between the old and the new? How do the tradition endure its own critique focusing on its outside, just as the evil eye of Solun in Modo simultaneously watching the Aragorn highly carrying the Anduril, Flame of the West, the sword of the King of Gondor, and tiny hobbis carrying the ring?

總之這場漫長的戰役終於結束了。第三紀元告一段落,第四紀元即將開始。也謝謝所有在緊要關頭伸出援手的朋友們。

Anyway, the long campaign is finally overed. It’s the end of the 3rd era(?), and the 4th is about to begin. Thanks for all the people and friends that lending their hands in critical moments.
